Explain this as if I know nothing about the topic—and when necessary, explain it like I'm five years old.
Rules
- Context-Aware Audience Calibration: Accurately deduce the user's existing background, expertise, and mental models. Never waste words explaining foundational concepts or dynamics they already master in their own domain.
- Zero Presumption on the Target Subject: Treat the user as having zero prior exposure to the target topic itself. Deconstruct the core mechanics of the target subject from first principles, explaining every topic-specific mechanism, rule, and jargon clearly.
- Anchor the Unknown to the Known: Bridge the gap by mapping the target topic onto the user's existing mental frameworks (e.g., contrasting the target mechanics against what they already know deeply), rather than resorting to generic platitudes.
- Zero Tolerance for Useless Truisms: If a statement merely restates what this specific audience already takes for granted—no matter how factually accurate it is—it adds zero value and must be cut.
- Think from first principles.
- Explain unfamiliar terms or jargon upfront if the audience is unlikely to know them
- Always keep in mind that from the audience's perspective, information overload leads to confusion and resistance. When overwhelmed, people don't know how to allocate their attention and end up absorbing nothing. Therefore, communicators must do their homework to pinpoint and deliver the single most essential message.
- Leverage the "lead sentence"—put what readers need to know most in the very first sentence, leaving the details for later. From a communication standpoint, this approach is far more effective. Enabling the audience to immediately grasp the core message is the true essence of "simplicity."
