version: "1.0.0" name: farming_and_animals description: Minecraft 1.21.1 farming and animal facts - farmland, water and light for crops, what each crop needs and drops, bone meal, sugar cane, pumpkins, melons, cactus and nether wart, breeding foods for every farm animal, taming, and wool, eggs and milk.
Farming and animals (1.21.1)
Farmland
- A hoe turns dirt, grass, dirt path or coarse dirt into farmland (coarse dirt becomes dirt first).
- Farmland is hydrated by water within 4 blocks horizontally on the same level or one above; hydrated farmland grows crops faster. Dry farmland with nothing planted turns back to dirt.
- Jumping or landing on farmland tramples it back to dirt; walking does not.
- Crops need light level 9 or more at the crop to keep growing (sunlight or torches), and break if their farmland turns to dirt.
- Bone meal (from bones: 1 bone → 3 bone meal) advances a crop several stages per use.
Crops
| Crop | Planted from | Harvest | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wheat | wheat seeds (from breaking grass) | 1 wheat + 0-3 seeds | 8 growth stages; 3 wheat → bread | |
| Carrot | carrot | 2-5 carrots | Carrots and potatoes are their own seed | |
| Potato | potato | 2-5 potatoes, 2% poisonous potato | Baked potato is the food | |
| Beetroot | beetroot seeds | 1 beetroot + seeds | 6 beetroot → beetroot soup | |
| Pumpkin / melon | seeds on farmland | a fruit block on an empty dirt, grass or farmland block next to the stem | The stem stays and fruits again; melon block → 3-7 slices | |
| Sugar cane | sugar cane on sand, dirt or grass directly beside water | grows to 3 tall; break the upper parts to keep the base | Paper (3 cane → 3 paper), sugar | |
| Cactus | on sand, with nothing solid beside it | up to 3 tall | Hurts on touch; smelts to green dye | |
| Cocoa beans | on jungle logs | 2-3 beans | ||
| Sweet berries | bush on grass or dirt | berries; the bush scratches | ||
| Nether wart | soul sand, any light, any dimension | 2-4 wart | Found in fortresses; brewing base | |
| Bamboo | dirt or sand | grows very fast | Scaffolding, sticks, fuel | |
| Kelp | under water | grows toward the surface | Dried kelp is food and, as a block, fuel | |
| Mushrooms | dark spots or mycelium / podzol | spread slowly | Bone meal on one grows a huge mushroom | |
| Saplings | dirt or grass, light 9+ | trees; leaves drop saplings, sticks, apples (oak, dark oak) | Spruce, jungle and dark oak can grow 2x2 giant trees |
Breeding
Feeding two adults of the same kind their breeding food makes them pair up and produce a baby. Parents can breed again after 5 minutes; a baby grows up in 20 minutes (feeding it speeds that up). Holding the breeding food makes the animals follow.
| Animal | Breeding food | |
|---|---|---|
| Cow, mooshroom, sheep, goat | Wheat | |
| Pig | Carrot, potato, beetroot | |
| Chicken | Any seeds (wheat, melon, pumpkin, beetroot, torchflower, pitcher pod) | |
| Rabbit | Dandelion, carrot, golden carrot | |
| Horse, donkey (tamed) | Golden apple, golden carrot | |
| Llama (tamed) | Hay bale | |
| Wolf (tamed) | Any meat | |
| Cat (tamed), ocelot | Raw cod, raw salmon | |
| Fox | Sweet berries, glow berries | |
| Turtle | Seagrass | |
| Bee | Flowers | |
| Panda | Bamboo (with bamboo nearby) | |
| Frog | Slimeball | |
| Axolotl | Bucket of tropical fish | |
| Camel | Cactus | |
| Armadillo | Spider eye | |
| Hoglin | Crimson fungus | |
| Strider | Warped fungus |
Taming
| Animal | How | |
|---|---|---|
| Wolf | Bones until hearts appear (each bone ~33%); then follows, sits, and fights for its owner | |
| Cat | Raw cod or salmon, approached slowly | |
| Parrot | Seeds (never cookies — poisonous) | |
| Horse, donkey, mule, llama | Mount repeatedly until it stops throwing the rider; a saddle (loot or trade only) lets a horse be steered |
Products
- Wool: shears give 1-3 wool and the sheep regrows it by eating grass. Sheep can be dyed.
- Eggs: chickens lay one every 5-10 minutes; a thrown egg sometimes hatches a chick.
- Milk: a bucket on a cow or goat; drinking it clears status effects.
- Honey and honeycomb: from full beehives with a glass bottle or shears; a campfire under the hive keeps the bees calm.
- Leather from cows, horses, llamas, hoglins; 4 rabbit hides also craft into leather.
