Minecraft 1.21.1 facts about reaching and beating the End - eyes of ender, stronghold placement and layout, the End portal room, the End's central island, end crystals and the ender dragon's mechanics, what the kill unlocks, and the outer islands with end cities and elytra.

The End (1.21.1)
Eyes of ender
- Eye of ender = 1 ender pearl + 1 blaze powder. Pearls come from endermen (0-1 each; densest in warped forests) and piglin bartering; blaze powder from blaze rods (1 rod → 2 powder).
- Thrown, an eye flies a short way toward the nearest stronghold and then drops back as an item or shatters (20% chance).
- Filling a portal takes 12 eyes at most; each frame generates with an eye already in it 10% of the time (1.2 on average).
Strongholds
- 128 per world, in 8 rings around the world origin (0, 0). The innermost ring has 3 strongholds between 1280 and 2816 blocks from the origin; the next has 6 at 4352-5888.
- Underground, usually around Y 0 to 50, built of stone bricks with mossy and cracked variants; corridors, iron doors with buttons, prison cells, libraries (chests with enchanted books and paper), and store rooms.
- The portal room is never next to the entrance staircase. It holds the 12 end portal frames around a 3x3 hole, a pool of lava under the frame, and a silverfish spawner on the stairs.
- Portal frames cannot be broken in survival, and an eye placed in a frame cannot be taken back. The 12th eye activates the portal.
Arriving in the End
- Entering the End portal is one way: the way back is the exit portal after the dragon dies, or dying.
- You arrive on a small obsidian platform at about (100, 48, 0), often in the void off the edge of the central island. The central island is end stone, its surface around Y 60.
- The void is under everything; falling off any edge is certain death and the items are lost.
- Beds explode here as in the Nether. Endermen are everywhere: looking one in the face angers it.
The central island
- 10 obsidian pillars stand in a ring around (0, 0), 76 to 103 blocks tall. Each carries an end crystal; 2 of them are inside iron-bar cages — those on the second and third shortest pillars (79 and 82 blocks). Pillar heights go up in steps of 3, thicker pillars being taller.
- The exit portal is the bedrock fountain at (0, 0); it is inactive until the dragon dies.
End crystals
- An end crystal heals the dragon by 1 HP every 0.5 s while it is close (a white beam joins them). Destroying a crystal while it is healing the dragon deals 10 damage to the dragon.
- Any hit, arrow or explosion destroys a crystal and makes it explode — stronger than a creeper and deadly up close. Caged crystals have to be uncaged (or hit through the bars from the right angle) first.
The ender dragon
| Fact | Value | |
|---|---|---|
| Health | 200 HP | |
| Damage taken anywhere but the head | about a quarter (so body hits are slow) | |
| Wing hit / head hit (Normal) | 5 / 10 HP, with heavy knockback toward the void | |
| Dragon's breath | Purple cloud of 3 HP per second on the ground | |
| Fireballs | Explode into a breath cloud where they land |
- It circles the island, dives at players, and perches on the exit portal fountain from time to time — more often the fewer crystals are left (chance 1 in 3 + crystals alive). While perched it breathes and can be hit in the head from the ground.
- While it flies, arrows hit it (the head takes full damage). While it is perched, arrows and wind charges bounce off it (arrows catch fire); melee hits land.
- It destroys most blocks it flies through, except obsidian, end stone, bedrock, iron bars and end portal blocks.
- Explosions hurt it normally, which is why beds (which explode in the End) are used against the perched dragon.
After the kill
- Its death opens the exit portal (back to the overworld spawn or bed) and leaves the dragon egg on top of the fountain. The egg teleports when hit; it is collected by letting it fall onto a torch or by piston.
- The first kill gives 12000 experience.
- An end gateway appears 96 blocks from the centre at Y 75: a 1-block bedrock opening that teleports to the outer islands about 1000 blocks away (usually entered by throwing an ender pearl into it). Each later kill adds another gateway.
- The dragon can be summoned again by placing 4 end crystals on the edges of the exit portal.
Outer islands
- End stone islands with chorus plants (chorus fruit teleports the eater; popped chorus fruit makes purpur blocks).
- End cities: purpur towers guarded by shulkers (30 HP, Levitation bullets). Their chests hold diamond and iron gear (often enchanted), and an end ship beside some cities carries the elytra and a dragon head.
- The space between islands is void; crossing it needs bridging or ender pearls.
