Villagers and trading (1.21.1)

An unemployed villager takes the profession of a free job site block near it. Until it has traded once, breaking its block and placing another changes its trades.

Nitwits (green robes) never take a job. Wandering traders appear near players with exotic goods.

How trading works

  • Emeralds are the currency. Villagers buy common items for them (sticks, coal, paper, wheat, string …) and sell useful ones.
  • Each trade earns the villager experience; it levels up from Novice through Apprentice, Journeyman and Expert to Master and unlocks two more trades per level.
  • Trades lock after a number of uses and restock when the villager works at its job site block (up to twice a day).
  • Prices go up when a trade is heavily used, and down for players with good reputation: curing a zombie villager or having the Hero of the Village effect makes trades much cheaper.

Villages

  • Villages generate in plains, desert, savanna, taiga and snowy plains, with houses, beds, farms, a bell, and job site blocks.
  • Villagers breed when there are free beds and they have enough food (bread, carrots, potatoes or beetroot, which farmer villagers share).
  • Iron golems (100 HP) spawn in villages with enough villagers; they attack hostile mobs and anyone who hurts a villager, and drop 3-5 iron ingots.
  • At night villagers go to bed and stay inside; zombies attack them.

Zombie villagers

  • A villager killed by a zombie may turn into a zombie villager (always on Hard, 50% on Normal).
  • Curing: throw a splash potion of Weakness at it and feed it a golden apple; it shakes and becomes a villager again after a few minutes (keep it out of the sun). Cured villagers give big discounts.

Raids

  • Killing a raid captain (a pillager wearing a banner, found at outposts and in patrols) drops an ominous bottle; drinking it gives Bad Omen. Entering a village with Bad Omen turns it into Raid Omen, and a raid starts shortly after.
  • A raid is several waves of pillagers, vindicators, evokers, witches and ravagers. Winning gives the Hero of the Village effect (big discounts).
  • Milk removes Bad Omen.
