LLM Red-Teaming & Jailbreaking
Techniques for evaluating model safety at the prompt/API level. Works on any model accessible via API. For testing and security evaluation only.
When to Use
- Red-teaming a model's safety training
- Evaluating whether a provider's safety filters are too aggressive (blocking legitimate code)
- Testing system prompt robustness against injection
- Comparing model censorship levels across providers
- Understanding what types of content a model will/won't generate
Attack Modes
1. System Prompt Templates
Pre-crafted system prompts that bypass safety filters using different strategies:
- Context boundary exploitation — exploit how models parse system vs. user message boundaries
- Role-playing override — instruct model it's in a "developer mode" or "unfiltered" persona
- Academic framing — frame unsafe requests as "security research" or "academic study"
- Translation attack — request content in a language with weaker safety filters, then translate
2. Prefill Engineering
Inject tokens into the assistant's response prefix to steer generation past safety guardrails:
The model continues from the prefill, bypassing the initial refusal.
3. Multi-Turn Erosion
Gradually escalate across multiple turns — start innocuous, incrementally approach the boundary:
Testing Methodology
- Establish baseline — Test with legitimate coding requests first
- Probe boundaries — Incrementally test content policy edges
- Document refusals — What triggers a refusal? Is it justified?
- Compare models — Test same prompts across providers
- Report findings — Document over-blocking and under-blocking
For Reasonix-Hermes
Useful for:
- Provider evaluation — Is a provider's safety filter blocking legitimate code generation?
- System prompt testing — Is our system prompt robust against injection?
- Tool description testing — Do tool descriptions leak capabilities that could be misused?
- Competitive analysis — How do different models handle the same coding tasks?
Ethical Constraints
- Only test models you have authorized access to
- Only test for legitimate security evaluation purposes
- Report over-blocking (false positives) to providers — these break coding tools
- Never use jailbreaks to generate harmful content
- Document refusals as evidence, not failures
