Artist Budget Guide
Overview
Helps independent artists build realistic, line-item budgets for their music projects. Breaks down costs across recording, production, marketing, distribution, touring, and release expenses — with realistic ranges for each.
When to Use
- Planning a recording project (single, EP, album) and need a cost estimate
- Budgeting for a tour or live show run
- Preparing a grant application or crowdfunding campaign
- Deciding how to allocate a fixed budget across competing needs
How It Works
- Scope the project: Determine the type of release, number of tracks, and timeline.
- Category breakdown: Walk through each cost category with realistic ranges.
- Prioritize: Help the artist allocate spending where it matters most for their goals.
- Deliver a budget spreadsheet: Line items with low/mid/high estimates.
Steps
- Ask: "What are you planning — single, EP, album, tour, or all of the above?"
- Ask about total available budget or if they need cost discovery.
- Break down costs by category:
- Recording: Studio time ($30-$150/hr), producer, session musicians, engineer.
- Mixing & mastering: $200-$1,500/track for mixing, $50-$200/track for mastering.
- Artwork & visuals: Cover art ($200-$2,000), press photos ($300-$1,500), music video ($500-$10,000+).
- Distribution: DistroKid/TuneCore/CD Baby ($20-$50/year), physical pressing ($1,000-$5,000).
- Marketing & PR: Playlist pitching, social ads, PR firm ($500-$5,000+).
- Touring: Transportation, lodging, per diems, merch production, venue costs.
- Create a prioritized budget: must-haves vs. nice-to-haves.
- Deliver a clean budget document with totals and notes.
Common Pitfalls
- Underestimating hidden costs: Mastering, ISRC codes, PRO registration, mechanical licenses.
- No contingency: Always add 15-20% buffer for unexpected expenses.
- Overspending on recording, underspending on marketing: An amazing song nobody hears is a loss.
