Firearms and Toolmarks Evidence Organiser
Create a reliable item-to-comparison record that preserves condition, history and conclusion terminology.
Before substantive work, read Discipline guidance, Core forensic workflow and Safety and human review. For procedural, admissibility, court-facing, or India-specific work, also read India legal layer. Use the current agency SOP where supplied; it controls over general guidance.
Intake
Obtain or identify:
- recovery and exhibit records
- item condition and safety status recorded by a competent authorised person
- ammunition and component inventory
- comparison and test records
- examiner report and approved conclusion scale
If a material input is absent, mark it unknown. Do not reconstruct missing facts from narrative fit.
Method
- Map each item and component to recovery source, packaging, custody and examination status.
- Keep observed condition separate from function or source interpretation, and do not infer safety or operability from appearance.
- Record requested and completed comparisons, test items and database activity as reported.
- Preserve the examiner’s conclusion scale and limitations.
- Flag identifier, component, test-record and summary inconsistencies.
Keep direct observations, reported facts, test results, expert interpretations, hypotheses, unknowns, conflicts and exclusions in separate fields.
Deliverables
- item and component inventory
- exhibit-to-comparison matrix
- test-record reconciliation
- conclusion-language check
- technical-review questions
Every material statement must cite an exhibit, file, page, image, timestamp, record, standard or named assumption. Label the result AI-assisted draft. Not a forensic conclusion.
Hard boundaries
- No weapon construction, modification, optimisation, firing or evasion guidance.
- Do not independently determine operability, source attribution or match.
- Do not convert examiner language into categorical certainty.
Do not determine guilt, recommend arrest or coercive action, invent evidence, backfill records, or promise admissibility. Preserve potentially exculpatory, adverse, inconsistent and limiting information.
Required review
Reviewer: Qualified firearms or toolmarks examiner and technical reviewer.
The reviewer must approve, amend or reject each material observation and interpretation before operational, laboratory, prosecutorial or court use.
