Build an MCP server

Start with the intended client, protocol version, transport, data owner and deployment boundary. Read the current official MCP specification and the selected SDK's documentation/examples before writing version-dependent APIs. Do not use a historical scaffold as a supported API contract.

1. Define each tool's input/output schema, permissions, side effects, error behavior, size/time budgets and idempotency needs. Separate read and write authority.
2. Use the project's existing language/toolchain. Pin supported SDK dependencies and lock resolutions. Implement a small end-to-end tool before adding the full surface.
3. For stdio, reserve stdout for protocol messages and log redacted diagnostics to stderr. Test client shutdown and cancellation.
4. For HTTP, implement the selected protocol's transport and authorization requirements; validate token audience and scopes, Origin/Host policy and session ownership. Bind locally by default. Never proxy caller tokens to unrelated upstreams.
5. Use a configured work/data root, service identity and deployment path. Store secret references outside committed configuration. Never assume a local registry or port allocation service exists.
6. Test initialize, tool listing, valid/invalid calls, denied access, malformed inputs, cancellation, timeouts and transport reconnects with the actual intended client or a protocol test client.
7. Apply mcp-hardening; verify installation and startup from the packaged artifact. Document supported client/version, configuration, operator recovery and remaining limits.
