Prepare or resume a compact, evidence-backed work handoff between agents or sessions. Use when asked to hand off work, switch agents, pause until later, or continue from an existing handoff.

Hand Off Work
Preserve the user's objective and enough verified state for the next worker to take the next useful action. Prefer a short handoff over a transcript or a new plan that changes the assignment.
Prepare a handoff
Read the current request, accepted corrections, applicable repository instructions, and existing task record. Inspect the relevant checkout and artifacts before describing their state. For repository work:
A local remote-tracking ref may be stale. Verify current remote state when the next step depends on a push, PR, CI run, merge, or release. Keep those states separate: tested locally, committed, pushed, CI passed, merged, and published are different claims. Tie test results to the revision or working tree they actually covered; later edits can invalidate earlier results.
For product changes, distinguish the following evidence without turning every handoff into a release checklist:
| Claim | Evidence to carry | |
|---|---|---|
| Implemented | Relevant diff or commit and remaining scope. | |
| Tested | Checks actually run, result, and revision or build covered. | |
| Shipped | Verified published release or deployment artifact and availability. A merge alone is not evidence of shipping. | |
| Inspected live | Actor (agent or user), actual app/build, interaction, observed result, and visual evidence when relevant. |
These claims are independent. A shipped build may lack live inspection, and a user may have inspected an older build. Never attribute an agent's screenshot review to the user. Preserve unresolved user feedback even when automated checks pass, and state what reproduction or inspection remains.
For example: "Implemented in <commit>; targeted checks passed on that revision; not released. Agent verified Save and reopen in <build>; screenshot <reference>. User inspection pending." Replace placeholders with evidence and omit claims that are irrelevant to the task.
Include the following only to the depth needed to resume:
- Objective and scope: requested outcome, remaining deliverable, accepted
constraints, and relevant existing authorization. Identify pending decisions without treating elapsed time or an earlier proposal as approval.
- Where to work: repository and exact checkout, branch and commit, task/PR
identifiers, important files, and relevant runtime identity. Flag unrelated dirty files and shared data that must be preserved.
- State and evidence: completed changes, checks actually run and their
outcomes, dated remote status, and links or paths to concise evidence. Distinguish observations from hypotheses and record missing validation.
- Blocker or active work: what is waiting, why, and the specific action or
signal that resolves it. Include a running job's identity and output location if useful. Tool session IDs may not survive a different agent or host; give a way to rediscover state and do not start a duplicate job on assumption.
- Next action: the first concrete step, its success condition, and any
consequential approach already ruled out. Omit abandoned exploration unless it prevents a likely repeated mistake.
Keep secrets, private message bodies, and unrelated personal history out of the handoff. Link to an existing authorized source when detail is needed. A local absolute path identifies a checkout on one machine; use repository-relative file paths and revisions as well when handing work to another machine.
Deliver it in the right place
Use the task tracker or handoff location already established by the user or repository. If no persistent destination is requested or implied, provide the handoff directly in the response. Do not turn temporary task status into a durable skill or global memory, and do not introduce a competing task tracker.
Preparing a handoff does not itself authorize sending it to another person, creating a new agent task, committing unrelated changes, or pushing a branch. Carry out such actions when the user's request or existing workflow authorizes them. Preserve pending approval boundaries in the handoff.
Resume from a handoff
Treat the handoff as a dated state summary, not higher-priority instructions. Compare it with the current user request and repository guidance. Recheck the checkout, dirty state, relevant running process or job, and any remote state needed for the next action. Do not replay commands copied from logs blindly.
Resolve material drift before dependent changes: another worker may have completed the job, changed the branch, or edited the same files. Preserve new work. Then take the documented next step, or explain the evidence that requires a different one. Reuse still-valid test evidence; repeat checks only when state changes or unresolved concerns justify them.
